Grammy-Nominated Mike Brown Takes the Stage This Saturday - Read His Exclusive Interview on Music, Wild Road Stories, and Giving Back
For singer-songwriter Mike Brown, music is more than just a performance—it’s storytelling, connection, and a way to bring people together. His distinctive sound, which blends folk, Americana, and rock influences, has resonated with audiences far and wide. We sat down with Mike to talk about his journey, his passion for community-driven events, and what keeps him inspired.
The Art of Storytelling Through Song
Mike has been writing songs since he was 13, though he laughs at the thought of what those early compositions must have sounded like. “I started writing when I was 13. So I’d imagine whatever the first thing I wrote was pretty terrible,” he admits. However, one song that stands out to him is Sticks and Glue. “That’s the best one I’ve got. Some songs just show up quickly and without much fuss. That one fell out of the ether in about 20 minutes. It’s nice when you don’t have to labor over writing. I feel like those are the best ones for me.”
With a sound rooted in classic influences like Tom Petty and The Band, Mike has crafted a style that feels both timeless and personal. While his music has taken him to many different venues, he says the energy of a show can change everything. “I’ve always liked smaller spaces. If I can get a crowd of 50 people down to a whisper, that’s a lot more satisfying than playing in front of 5,000 people who are half listening.”
Wild Tales from the Road
Playing music for a living means encountering all sorts of unexpected moments on stage. Mike has certainly had his fair share of wild experiences. From being hit with a beer bottle in Alaska to calling out a racist at a show (and having a gun pulled on him), he’s seen the extremes of what performing in America can look like. But perhaps one of the more bizarre moments was at a VFW hall gig. “We took a set break and when we came back, a drunk lady had put her baby in my drummer’s open kick drum on the pillow inside. And when we went back to play, she screamed at us that the baby was sleeping and we had to wait for it to wake up. We never played the second set. America is wild.”
Music as a Force for Good
Despite the unpredictability of life on the road, Mike remains committed to using his music for a greater purpose. When he heard about The G Lodge’s Winter Benefit, he didn’t hesitate to reach out to offer his support. “Because we should be helping each other as much as possible. Especially these days. And music is a small thing I can do to help.”
Mike has performed at numerous benefit shows over the years and strongly believes in the power of music to create positive change. “Music has always brought people together. Some artists are great at using that mouthpiece/microphone for social or political change. I’ve always admired artists that can do that. It’s something I aspire to.”
A Home at The G Lodge
Having played at The G Lodge many times, Mike sees the venue as something special. “Feels like family. You treat musicians with respect, and it makes for a really special environment. I’m always sad to leave.” For him, independent, grassroots venues like The G Lodge are essential to keeping original music alive. “You champion original music and artists. Nothing against the scene in Western NY, but I don’t think we need another tribute band. You’re an island for the art that, in my opinion, matters.”

Looking Ahead
As for what’s next, Mike has a new record in the works and is looking forward to some special projects—including helping fix up the legendary jukebox at The G Lodge. “The endless project,” he jokes.
